An Example of a German-Themed Restaurant from my Childhood in the US

Like many Americans from the Midwest, most of my family immigrated to the US after WW1. My great grandparents on one side immigrated and my grandfather on the other side immigrated in this time period.
I was thinking back on my childhood and remembering some family gatherings we had. There was a popular small restaurant/hotel chain that they took us to every time we all got together called Jumer's. I am not sure what style architecture you would call it, but they all have a Germanic theme to them.
Here are some pictures below: https://www.google.com/search?q=Jumer%27s+restaurant+peoria&client=firefox-b-1-d&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwil3ZrjkujpAhVpc98KHSsTBC0Q_AUoA3oECBoQBQ&biw=1280&bih=579
I didn't know this until I looked it up today, but they have since sold their company to a larger corporation and operate hotels and casinos. But there is a bit of history there if you are interested.: https://www.jumerscasinohotel.com/about-us/history
Anyway, I thought some of you native Germans might find it amusing to see an example of how they brought a bit of Germany to the US with them. Most of these places have since died and you would be hard pressed to find a good "German" restaurant anymore. A few still exist, but they are not usually as nice as they once were. Hope you find it amusing.

Following a week of gambling in Las Vegas, Marine Ron Parkhurst was found floating in remote cove of Lake Mead about 30 miles from The Strip with a bullet in the back of his head. The Clark County coroner concluded he had been in the water for about three days. His case is still unsolved.

Summary: In June of 1997, Marine Recruiter Ron Parkhurst walked out of his Huntington Beach, CA office and never came back. He packed up his black Ford Mustang, drove to Las Vegas where he spent a week gambling. He checked into a Motel 6 and over the course of a week he made small ATM withdrawls ranging from $60 to $200. He was seen several times between June 15 and 18 at the MGM Grand. By the end of the week his bank account had only $53.00.
At 4 AM June 18, Parkurst's Mustang was found abandoned on an access road near Lake Mead. His CD collection was gone, his wallet hound but with no license or ATM card. Three days later on June 2 around 10 am a women discovered Parkhurst's body floating in the water. He had been shot by a 45 caliber in the back of the skull.
Some other oddities about this case: Parkhurst was married to a woman named Rebecca whom his family never met. When asked, Ron claimed she was the maid. She claimed his veterans benefits after death, and even listed a son born 1993, although its unclear if Parkhurst is the father. He also allegedly purchased a life insurance policy in the months before his death. At the time of his death, he lived alone in an apartment in Irvine, California.
The case has remained unsolved for the past 22 years. A year ago Parkhurst's sister Diane Garrett has been in touch with LVPD's cold case unit and hopes for some leads.
What are your theories on Ron's death? Gambling debt gone wrong?

Cold case: Sister wants answers in 1997 murder of OC-based Marine by Keith Sharon
His nephews called him the strongest man in the world.
He had a “bright and shiny” bald head, his master sergeant said with a laugh. “You could see him from a mile away. He was quiet, well-mannered. He always stood up straight whether he was in military attire or civilian clothes.”
Ron Parkhurst was a Marine. “A really good Marine,” said Master Sgt. Rene Robles.
Parkhurst was so gung-ho he was made a recruiter, working out of the USMC substation in Huntington Beach. There is no explanation for why in 1997 he walked out of that office, after 13 exemplary years in the military, and never came back. He had a meeting scheduled with the family of a recruit, but he didn’t show.
One late spring afternoon, he ditched his responsibilities, hopped into his black, immaculate Ford Mustang, accompanied only by a vast collection of music on compact discs, and headed to Las Vegas. Inexplicably, he spent a week hitting the casinos. He was wearing cutoff jeans and a red and white T-shirt when he walked out of the MGM Grand on June 18, 1997, the last day of his life.
On June 21, 1997, Ron Parkhurst was found floating in the remote Saddle Island Cove in the waters of Lake Mead about 30 miles from The Strip. The Clark County coroner concluded he had been in the water for about three days.
He had a .45-caliber bullet in the back of his head.
The U.S. Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police concluded the death was a homicide. The LVMPD report classified the case as “murder WDW” (with a deadly weapon). But “due to the lack of logical investigative leads, this investigation is closed,” the NCIS said in its report from June 1997. The case will be reopened if either the Las Vegas police ask for assistance, or a suspect is identified.
In 22 years, no suspect has been identified, and the Las Vegas police have not asked for help. Although. there is a potential thread to the investigation that has not yet been fully pursued.
“I’ve always felt he was killed execution-style,” said Diane Garrett, Ron’s sister, and mother of the nephews who were impressed with their uncle. “His death was devastating. The family has never been the same afterward.”
Garrett has been in touch recently with the Las Vegas police, where a cold case detective is taking another look at the 22-year-old unsolved murder. Cold case investigator Terri Miller has spoken with Garrett, but did not return a call from the Southern California News Group.
“I was drop-jawed when I heard what happened,” Master Sgt. Robles said. “All of us Marines felt like one of our Marines was down.”
A Marine is still down.
Kept a distance
Parkhurst could run. He was on the cross country team at Manual High School in Peoria, Illinois.
“He was always this kid with an impish kind of personality,” said Garrett, his older sister. “If he got in trouble, he would smile. He never took things seriously. He was always joking.”
After high school, he needed some stability in his life so he picked the military, specifically the Marines. He worked as an aircraft mechanic.
He was stationed for a while in Tennessee where he met Rebecca Carolyn DeLoach, who had been twice divorced. On Valentine’s Day of 1992, Rebecca became his wife.
The strange thing about his marriage was that Parkhurst didn’t tell his family about it. Garrett said she called him once a week – on Sunday nights – and she would ask about Rebecca. Parkhurst never gave details.
“Who was the woman who answered the phone?” Garrett would ask. “He would say, ‘That was the maid.’”
Parkhurst and Rebecca moved to California, so they were far enough away to keep his family guessing. When she filled out military forms as his dependent after his death, Rebecca listed a child named Justin, born in 1993. Parkhurst’s family does not know if he was Justin’s father.
Robles said that by the time he met Parkhurst in 1995 or early 1996, he told everyone he was single. Rebecca was not invited by his family to his funeral.
Attempts to reach Rebecca for comment in this story were unsuccessful.
Piecing together details
In 1997, Parkhurst was living alone in an apartment on Thunder Road in Irvine.
Suddenly, in June, he dropped out of his life and went to Vegas. He checked into a Motel 6. He made several small ATM withdrawals, none more than $200, during the last week of his life, including a withdrawal of $60 on June 18, 1997. That final transaction left $53.85 in his checking account.
He was seen several times between June 15 and 18 at the MGM Grand.
At 4 a.m. on June 18, Parkhurst’s Mustang was found abandoned on an access road next to Lake Mead. His CD collection was gone. His wallet was found, but it had no driver’s license or ATM card inside. Garrett said she has been told by police that a witness saw another car speeding away from Parkhurst’s Mustang.
Three days later, on June 21, just before 10 a.m., a woman discovered Parkhurst’s body in the water. He had been shot in the occipital area of the skull. Police were able to get DNA samples from the car, but they proved to be inconclusive.
Police searched Parkhurst’s Irvine apartment five days after his body was discovered.
The report said Parkhurst may have purchased a life insurance policy in the months before his death. But there is no follow-up report about the investigation into that potential lead.
‘Disbelief’
Robles, who was Parkhurst’s supervisor in Huntington Beach, flew to Las Vegas to identify his body. Parkhurst was buried in his dress blues, and Robles accompanied the casket to Parkhurst’s family home in Peoria, Illinois.
Everyone on the plane was asked to remain seated while Parkhurst’s casket was taken off the plane.
“Everyone was staring out the windows of the plane,” Robles said. “His parents were very hurt. They were in shock. Disbelief.”
Parkhurst was given an honor guard funeral with a flag-folding ceremony.
A $5,000 reward was established for information leading to an arrest. No one ever claimed the reward.
Leonard and Nancy Parkhurst, Ron’s parents, both died in the 22 years since his murder. Garrett said her parents wouldn’t talk about his death to her or at family gatherings.
“It was never spoken of,” she said.
A year ago, she was going through her parents’ belongings when she found the extensive Judge Advocate General report on her brother’s death.
She started contacting people mentioned in the report.
She has considered advertising on a billboard in Orange County.
“This is something I’ve had rolling around in my brain – a billboard,” Garrett said. “It would say, ‘Do you know what happened to this person?’”
She said the Las Vegas police are taking a new look at the case, and the cold case investigator has asked permission to begin interviewing people such as Rebecca Parkhurst and a “person of interest.”
So far, Garrett doesn’t know if the new investigation has been launched.
“Somebody has to know something,” Garrett said. “I want to know what happened.”

I made a list of content from the current wave of Boxsets and whether DGM sells them [Part 1]

I made a list of content from the current wave of Boxsets and whether DGM sells them [Part 1]
You can find Part 2 here
Based on a previous post, I decided to make a list of every disc from each of the currently available King Crimson boxsets. I do not include the content from the original Court of the Crimson King boxset from 2009 as that is long out of print and King Crimson is going to be redoing that set in the future. Where possible, I will include links to DGM if the discs are available for sale digitally through their store, in case you aren't interested in the sets as a whole, but might still want portions of them. If the disc is exclusive to the boxset, then I will make a note of it. This list is in order of when in King Crimson's history the boxsets cover, not necessarily the release order the sets came out in. For the sake of condensing the list as well as ease of reading the list, I will leave off the Discs that do not include studio releases as the main focus of this post is to show where on DGM Live you can purchase the content of the boxsets without having to purchase the entire boxset.

Sailors' Tales (1970-1972)

On (and off) The Road

On (and off) The Road
After a nearly 7 year hiatus, King Crimson is back after Fripp brought back Bill Bruford and enlisted Americans Tony Levin and Adrian Belew into a very different iteration of King Crimson, one that wasn't even originally going to be called King Crimson. This box set covers this era, encompassing the 1980s and the associated studio albums of Discipline, Beat, and Three of a Perfect Pair. This Box set was released on October 28, 2016.
CD Content-
  1. Discipline
  2. Live in Japan December 18, 1981 - Available on DGM Live Here
  3. Beat
  4. Live at Alabamahalle September 29, 1982 - Available on DGM Live Here
  5. Fragmented - Available on DGM Live Here
    1. This is a set of studio recordings made that would eventually be scrapped in favor of what would become Three of a Perfect Pair. This was previously available in the King Crimson Collector's Club, but this version has 2 additional tracks. The DGM Live purchase lacks the additional tracks as well. The additional tracks are:
      1. Yoli Yoli
      2. Adrian and Robert
  6. Three of a Perfect Pair
  7. Absent Lovers- Not on DGM Live
    1. This is not available as a Digital purchase from DGM Live, however you can purchase a CD copy of it from DGM USA or DGM UK.
  8. Absent Lovers- Second half of Disc 7's content
  9. Are you recording Gary? - Not on DGM Live

The title track is 15 minutes of King Crimson jamming and chatting working out material. The other three tracks are essentially abridged versions of the three albums of the era showing various portions of the albums in work in progress states.

Museum of Waste LLC v. City of Peoria

Petition of Writ

Museum of Waste LLC v. City of Peoria
Comes the petitioner, Aubrion Petitioning the Court to reverse the ruling of the 2nd District court of Appeals of the State of Lincoln.
May it please the court, the City of Peoria’s city code had a clear ban of table games and slot machines within its city limits, the legality of this ban is not disputed in this case, what is disputed is whether this ban can infringe on what the Museum of Waste’s claim to be protected speech. The lower court has decided through the use of speech that the Museum of Waste LLC is within its right to ignore this code and that it may continue its facilitated gambling. I am here to argue that though the Museum of Waste may have a 1st amendment interest in having the exhibit in question, the City of Peoria’s interest in protecting the public from the potential financial devastation of gambling outweighs this interest and that intermediate scrutiny must be applied.
The case for intermediate scrutiny can be established simply by observing that the gambling used by the museum of waste goes far beyond simple artistic speech. Anyone who walks into the Museum of waste is not observing a proactive painting or a bold sculpture, but walking into something that goes far beyond normal art, an exhibit that has the elements of a casino. This casino is not just for show though, real money is at play here and no matter how much this money is wrapped around an artistic or communitive experience, it is none the less real from real people who are ultimately at risk here. Speech may be the strongest right we have, but it can not be used as a guise to break the law or in this case a city code. The court of Appeals in its opinion cites “speech can’t be abridged because of its content or conduct see Stromberg v. California, 283 U.S. 359 (1931); Tinker v. Des Moines, 393 U.S. 503 (1969).” The key difference between these cases and the circumstances at hand is that any harm that the speech in these cases may have inflected was only due to its symbolic nature and is not in any way tangible so there is in no way enough public interest in banning these types of speeches, e.g the red flag in Stromberg, or a simple armband in Tinker. Here we have speech that has a direct tangible financial impact on the public who enter the museum, no matter the warning signs or points made to dissuade people entering the museum, people will still come to gamble, they will still lose money, and they will still be harmed in this process. This harm is what overcomes whatever interest the museum has and justifies the governmental interest in protecting the public from the financial loss of gambling, this purpose may not meet the level of strict scrutiny, but fits the important level intermediate scrutiny does.

Conclusion

The Museum of Waste’s exhibit could have used fake money to drive its point, it could have used methods that did not interfere with the City of Peoria’s codes, but it decided that to drive its point home it needed to use the real money of the people who entered its museum and in doing so broke the City of Peoria’s codes. We would not allow a hypothetical museum of pain that severely injured anyone who entered regardless of how informed they may be, nor would we allow a museum of any number of crimes if those crimes were to be committed within the museum, it should be no different here. We must not allow reasonable laws written in the public interest to be broken in the guise of art, the public interest is strong enough to apply intermediate scrutiny and reverse the ruling of the lower court. Thank you.

DG Vacation Recommendations

A couple buddies and I have been playing disc golf for 3-5 years. We have decided that we would like to go on a "guys vacation" where we do nothing but play disc golf and poker. We all live in the Midwest (Indianapolis and Peoria, IL).
I was hoping the community here could recommend a city that we should visit in 2020 that offers at least one casino that does poker (1/2 NL) and had multiple disc golf courses that are unique, beautiful, or interesting in some way.
Despite the fact that we've been playing for a bit, we are still total amateurs, so some crazy water-based OB course is probably out.

Why Do People Think a Casino Is Such A Good Idea?

I haven't lived there for 10 years, but I grew up in the Rockford area and still keep up with the regional news. I have been dismayed to see that both state politicians AND Rockford's leaders think that the best way to stimulate regional economic growth is....a casino.
The civic consensus on this one issue is mind-boggling. A casino seems like such a short-sighted solution that will worsen the city's crime problems, depress local morale and force Rockford to continue acting as Chicago's red-headed stepchild. Would it really bring a strong enough boost to local employment and wages to justify those costs? And why don't I ever see news stories about local opposition to the proposal -- is it non-existent?
Instead, why haven't Rockford's leaders advocated for some sort of expansion of U of I/ISU instead? The College of Medicine has been in town for a while, and the strength of Rockford's healthcare industry seems like a testament to how much that investment has grown the economy. Bloomington, Carbondale and Chambana are thriving because of their affiliations with their respective schools. Rockford does not have the luxury of a Caterpillar or Deere like Peoria and the Quad Cities -- it's just sitting as its own little island in Illinois without a major corporate or university presence. So why try to solve that problem with a casino?

Looking for Romantic Midwest Vacation Ideas, Picky Travelers

(Sorry this is so long)
My husband and I live in the Chicago suburbs. We want a nearby-ish romantic-ish vacation for 3-5 nights (spanning a weekend), under $2000 including food and entertainment. We absolutely loved Sedona, AZ and want to have a similar experience near home. We’re struggling to find anywhere that sounds good to both of us. Looking for any recommendations at all.
Must have: - less than 6 hours drive (not flying) - multiple eateries - at least mid-range quality lodging - places to walk around and explore (indoor, outdoor, urban, nature, anything goes) - flexible and sparse itinerary - clean lodging with microwave and fridge
Wants/would enjoy: - brewery, distillery, and/or winery - interesting restaurants - some degree of privacy at/near lodging (secluded cabin, less traveled path near hotel, etc.) - romantic atmosphere - in-room or in-hotel spa - adults only lodging - pretty nature walks, botanical garden, etc. - museums (especially science/technology) - encouraging environment to “unplug” (no TV in room, etc.) - flexible and sparse itinerary - cute shops with hand made stuff to admire - places to have drinks within walking distance from lodging (noisy bars don’t count)
Not interested in (but wouldn’t detract): - golfing - boating/water sports - sports events - bar scene/night life - concerts/theater - casino/gambling - advanced hiking trails - shopping mall or designer stores - amusement parks
Avoid: - flights - camping - cruises (do they even have those on Great Lakes??? Doesn’t matter.) - lodging filled with noisy children - Chicago, Branson, Peoria, Nashville, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin Dells
So, any ideas?

Trumping the chump? Exposing Trump as the greatest fraud on Earth

By: Clay Reynolds - August 30, 2019
Read the article here: https://www.nationofchange.org/2019/08/30/trumping-the-chump-exposing-trump-as-the-greatest-fraud-on-earth/?_thumbnail_id=733129
Robert Becker’s comparison of Donald Trump to P.T. Barnum is one I have made myself in far less detail and with far less eloquence or specificity. Trump is definitely the P.T. Barnum of our time, though; he is a huckster, a fraud, and what in Barnum’s day would be called a “humbug,” a “mountebank,” a “bunko artist.” But Barnum had the singular advantage of being far more socially conscious and self-aware and, it seems from most accounts, of being a very good person.
For all his self-aggrandizement and fakery, Barnum was a genuinely generous and philanthropic. He was also so self-aware, understanding the difference between public image and personal assessment. Trump makes no such distinction. With Trump, what you see is what you get. He is so clearly a crook, that people somehow overlook the crookedness of him. He is guileless in presenting his schemes, wrapping them in open packages of worthlessness for happy customers who tirelessly dole out their hard-earned cash to be taken in. He is, moreover, a man with no sense of personal loyalty, no ability to commit to either idea or individual, and no moral compass. Moreover, he’s an individual with no originality, no genuineness, no creativity; pretty much, he’s an inadequate and sad imitation of something that he seems to have been told he should be. In sum, he’s a counterfeit, a phony, a liar and a cheat. He should never be left alone with a child—or a pet.
Trump is more than a charlatan, though. He’s a sign of our times. At least every couple of weeks or so, the news reports on some fraud being visited on unsuspecting people who make no other mistake other than to answer the telephone and listen and respond civilly. Schemes to bilk money out of innocent and trusting people are, these days, as common as Starbucks’ signs. Sometimes, it’s incredible that victims could be so naive as to believe that something that sounds too good to be true is not true at all, but on the whole, honest people are trusting, and, of course, they’re human. Fundamentally, this plays to the old gambit that “you can’t cheat an honest man.” Greed, desperation, and fear all feed into this, and today’s con artists are excellent at exploiting it. Fake threats from the IRS or Social Security office, warranty departments, credit card companies, even banks clutter answering machines. Pyramid schemes and get-rich-quick gambits vie with fake contractors and promises of home repairs and fixes that never are done, even after hefty front-money is paid. Phony insurance companies, fake loan companies, fake roofing companies, fake yard services, carpet cleaners, and dream vacation companies. It used to be that these kinds of things were associated with strings of cheap used car lots (“No Credit? No Problem! We tote the note!”), mobile home dealers, and quickie loan outfits. Nowadays, they’re likely to be in glass-and-steel high-rise offices, and their corporate reps are wearing $1000 suits and Gucci loafers, driving Teslas and eating sushi at The Executive Grill. No one gives a damn about that. The spirit of P. T. Barnum lives.
Trump is a con artist’s con artist, though, a man after everyone’s wallet. The difference, between Trump and Barnum, though, was that Barnum never actually lied to people. He was a master at telling people that what they were paying for was a fraud, and then he would charge them money to see it, anyway. My favorite example was the mummified mermaid that carried a sign that clearly said, “Fake.” But people paid hard cash to see it. I also liked his posting of a large sign that said, “Egressus,” and led patrons of his museum to a door that led to the outside and locked behind them. He explained that it was the only way he could get them to leave the museum and make room for more people to come in. Oddly, no one complained about that. They understood that the joke was on them.
Trump’s joke is on us. We have allowed this to happen. We stood by watched as he rode to an effortless win. His calculus was absolutely on target. He realized he only had “to fool some of the people most of the time” to persuade them to vote for him, or at least to vote against Clinton. But Hillary wasn’t really the problem. He would have done the same thing to Bernie Sanders. Or to anyone. His tactics would have remained the same–attack, humiliate, denigrate, castigate, mischaracterize, insult. Then come out and say, “Only kidding.”
The problem the Democrats have with Trump and with the Republicans who blindly follow him, in general, boils down to one thing: They take them seriously. They should take a page from Trump’s own playbook. They should laugh at them. Openly make fun of them, ridicule their idiotic intransigence, make fun of their extremism, paint them as caricatures, reduce them to cartoons rather than people. It may seem like schoolyard meanness, and many would say such tactics are “beneath them.” And so they are. So they should be. But nobody got rid of Barnum’s museum or his circus by calling it a sham and a fraud. Hell, they even tried to burn him out at one point. Trump is ripe for ridicule. But only late-night pundits do that, and they’re preaching to the converted. Where the hell is Jon Stewart when you need him, where is today’s Edward R. Murrow?
The main-stream media is no help. Top reporters sit blithely and nod with understanding as Trump openly contradicts himself, reverses himself, denies facts that are right in front of him. They never laugh derisively and refuse to accept such dreck at face value. They never say, “Oh, come on. What kind of fool do you take me for?” That, unfortunately, is usually obvious.
The only hope I see for defeating Trump is to find the candidate amidst the field of carping Democratic back-stabbers who has a sense of humor, who can make fun of Trump, who can use ridicule and satire to expose him. Going at Trump head-on won’t work. Calling him a crook and a liar won’t work. Trump is a master of deflection, of deceit, and of the Big Lie. But he’s sensitive to ridicule. They should make fun of him. Pundits like Bill Mahr have Trump’s attention all the time; he sued Mahr for comparing him to an orangutan, and he tweets about Mahr all the time. But Mahr has too small an audience to make a difference. The candidates who remain in a still overcrowded race can reach millions, but they need to get the chips off their shoulders and put away the knives and clubs. They need to understand that furiously labeling Trump as a “threat to America” isn’t going to play in Peoria, or in St. Petersburg, or in the places where they need to sell it. Making fun of him will. Reducing him to a spluttering tweeter with the sensibility of a ten-year-old who takes a taunt seriously and is ready to fight at the drop of an insult might reveal who Trump is even to the densest of his followers. They like humor, because they can understand it. If the Democrats would go after Trump with a satiric smile, they will show that he is indeed the son of a bitch that he is, and people will start to think.
I know that the issues matter; the majority of Democratic hopefuls seize on some major point or other–medicare for all, climate change, LGBT Rights, immigration, gun violence, free education–and elevate it to a priority. In truth, none of these things matters. People don’t elect Medicare for All, because no one realistically thinks it will ever happen; people don’t elect Climate Change, because even those who think it’s real don’t think it’s real. People long ago gave up on pie in the sky promises. What they crave is stability; what they want is competent leadership. People elect a person. They vote for who they like. They vote their hearts and their gut. They don’t vote their brains. If that were the case, we’d elect smarter people than we do. The IQs of the past several presidents shows men of intelligence, sure (with one glaring exception, at least); but what you really see are men who knew how to make themselves likable. Hillary was most decidedly unlikable. Trying to imagine a personal conversation with her tightens the colon, sort of like something you might have to endure with an elderly aunt who wants to pinch your cheek and call you “Sweetie.” So, for that matter, was Sanders unlikable; he resembles your crazy uncle at Thanksgiving continuing to complain about the departure of the Dodgers from Brooklyn, especially after he’s had too much wine. Looking at the whole Democratic field, I don’t think I’d want to sit down and have a cup of coffee, much less a beer, with any of them. They’re too damned serious, too earnest, too angry. I’d be bored in five minutes and looking for the “effugium.”
So that’s my advice to the candidates. Loosen up. Relax. Laugh. Poke fun at Trump. Make him mad. You do that by denigrating him, mocking him: make fun of his ties, his belly, his hair, his age, his inability to spell or compose a coherent sentence, his lack of reading comprehension skills, his general ignorance of the world, his bankruptcies, his failed business ventures. He’s ripe for ridicule. Use that.
Barnum and Trump. It’s a fascinating comparison. But it misses more than it meets. Still, there is a lesson here. The key to defeating Trump lies in his own techniques. Start calling him “Fat Donnie.” or “Little Donnie,” “Dottering Donnie,” “Deadbeat Donnie,” “Double-Bogey Donnie,” “Trump the Tripper.” Accuse him of using a “foot wedge to improve his lie,” then compliment him for never having to “improve a lie,” as he’s a “master of lying.” Point out that he believes the last thing he heard, although he can’t recall who he heard it from. Talk about his proclivity for fast food, his lack of taste in furnishings. Ask when he last drove a car or flew commercial. Depict him standing bewildered in front of a vending machine trying to figure out what coins have what denominations, since it’s a safe bet that he’s never handled hard money in his life. Note that he has no idea in the world how to crimp a brim on a baseball cap. Work the toilet-paper joke. “There goes Tripping Trump, with what remains of the economy on his shoe.” Make fun of his lack of knowledge, of history, of music, or whatever. Skewer him for his fraudulent enterprises. Suggest that he’s trying to turn the White House into another failed Trump hotel and casino, wonder if the groundsmen have been paid lately. Ask about the undocumented staff at his resorts.
While you’re at it, don’t let his most supportive minions off the hook. There’s “Millstone Mitch,” who weighs down the Senate; “Lazy Aunt Lindsay,” who always condemns Trump’s actions but does nothing about them. “Stupid Sean Hannity,” a jumped-up radio DJ with no sense whatsoever; “Wide-Awake Kelly-Ann,” who has the moral integrity of a slug but without the intelligence. And the list goes on: Jared, Don Jr., Ivanka. They’re all ripe for crude comedy and derisive satire.
As a tactic, it’s cheap, yeah; it’s banal, yeah; it’s obvious, yeah; it’s crude, yeah. But with Trump, it works. It gets his back up, forces him into more mistakes. A well-placed jibe, properly managed insult, tagging with an insulting label or nickname; these things stick. Trump has proved that time and again. Fight fire with fire, locker-room humor with locker-room humor, mud with mud. Otherwise, at the end, all you’re going to have is clean but empty hands, and four more years (at least) of Donnie the Dancing Demagogue. And you’ll have nothing to blame but your personal sense of integrity.
